Kitesurfing Lo Stagnone & Marsala Lagoon
Located just a few kilometers from the historic town of Marsala, the Lo Stagnone lagoon is a kitesurfing world wonder. It offers unmatched conditions with knee-deep water stretching as far as the eye can see. Unlike the crowded kite schools in the city center, our selected hotels are located directly on the lagoon shore. You get the best of both worlds: the peace of a nature reserve for riding, and the proximity to Marsala for evening dinners and wine tasting.
Why kitesurf at Lo Stagnone?
Lo Stagnone, the lagoon just north of Marsala in western Sicily, is considered one of the best flat-water spots in the world for learning and for freestyle. The lagoon is a protected nature reserve where the water stays knee to waist deep for hundreds of metres, so you can stand up almost anywhere. That safety, combined with steady wind and the backdrop of old windmills and salt pans, makes it a magnet for beginners, freestylers and anyone who wants to progress fast in a calm, forgiving environment.
The spot: a giant standing-depth lagoon
The lagoon offers vast stretches of flat, shallow water separated from the open sea by the island of Isola Lunga. Because you can touch the bottom over most of the riding area, getting back upwind is never stressful and crashes are low-consequence, which is exactly why so many schools run their courses here. More confident riders use the same flat water to nail their first jumps and freestyle tricks. The bottom is mostly sand with some seagrass, so booties are a good idea.
Wind and the best time to visit
Lo Stagnone is driven by the north-westerly Maestrale, with a wind probability around 75% in season. The reliable months run from May to September, when thermal reinforcement adds to the gradient wind on most afternoons, typically in the 12 to 22 knot range. July and August are the windiest and busiest; May, June and September are slightly quieter and very pleasant. Water sits around 26°C in summer, so a shorty or board shorts are usually enough in the warm months.
For beginners, families and non-kiters
This is one of the easiest places in Europe to take your first lessons: the standing depth removes most of the fear factor, and the local centres are well equipped with multilingual instructors. Off the water, you are minutes from Marsala with its famous fortified wine, the Stagnone salt pans at sunset, and day trips to the island of Mozia. It is an ideal mix for couples and families who want kitesurfing by day and Sicilian food, wine and culture in the evening.
Getting there and getting around
The nearest airport is Trapani–Birgi (TPS), only about 15 minutes from the lagoon, with seasonal connections across Europe; Palermo (PMO) is the larger alternative around 1h30 away. A rental car is handy for exploring Marsala and the coast, but our selected hotels sit directly on the lagoon shore, so you can reach the water on foot and skip the daily commute that city-centre schools require.
