The spot
The kite centre on the hotel grounds
ION CLUB has run a windsurf centre at the Shams hotels since 1991 and added its kite centre to the grounds of the Shams Prestige in 2003. From the gardens you walk about 50 m along the beach, Sportif says, to the centre, where ION describes the launch as easy. Kiters and windsurfers have separate zones, and the few coral patches are marked.
The wind follows a daily pattern: side-offshore from the left in the morning, lighter and good for lessons or a downwinder to Tobia Island, about 4 km away, then side-shore and steadier from about noon, often 20 to 25 knots in the afternoon. ION CLUB's windsurf base is about 500 m south, in front of the Shams Lodge.
Partners
For partners and non-kiters
The resort is built for peace and quiet: no children, a heated infinity pool, a private beach and a spa with sauna, hammam, massages and jacuzzi. Its facilities list adds squash and clay tennis courts, an indoor gym, a rooftop cross-fitness area, a beach fitness area with trainer-led sessions every day at 11:00, a running trail, beach volleyball and a diving centre. As part of the Shams village, guests can also use the shared amenities of the sister hotels next door.
Swimmers have a marked open-water area in the sea, kept free of surfers and close to shallow water, from 8:00 until sunset. Dining, as sold all-inclusive by ION CLUB and Sportif, runs from a breakfast buffet to à la carte dinners with a salad bar, with a beach bar and a main bar.
Lessons
The kite school on the grounds
ION CLUB Safaga teaches kitesurfing and wing foiling with IKO and VDWS instructors, rents Duotone gear and stores your own equipment, from its centre on the Shams Prestige grounds. Guests of the Shams hotels do not pay the €7 daily beach entrance that riders from other hotels pay.
Travel
Location and getting there
Shams Prestige is at km 10 on the Hurghada–Safaga road in Abu Soma, at the northern end of the line of Shams hotels. From Hurghada airport, ION CLUB's directions are about 45 minutes (60 km) south on the highway: leave at the first exit before Safaga, turn left in front of the Amarina hotel and drive to the end of the road.
