In short

Fuerteventura gets the north-east trade wind for much of the year, and in the south the hills of the Jandía peninsula funnel it across Sotavento beach. There it blows side-offshore and is strongest from June to September, when ION Club reports around 20 knots in the morning rising to 35 in the afternoon. Around full and new moon, high tide floods a lagoon behind a sandbank, up to 4 km long, 200 m wide and 35 to 85 cm deep, where beginners can stand; on other days you ride the open sea, always with rescue cover.

Our two hotels stand together at Playa Barca, about 3 km south of Costa Calma: Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura, a 5-star all-inclusive resort with a kids club, about 110 m from the kite centre, and the adults-only ZEL Fuerteventura, about 200 m away. René Egli runs the kite centre in their shared palm garden and is the only school licensed to teach in the lagoon. In the north, Flag Beach near Corralejo suits all levels at mid and high tide, and El Cotillo is for wave riders.

The spots

The kite spots of Fuerteventura

The trade wind blows from the north and north-east for most of the year and sweeps the island's east coast. Two areas matter most: Sotavento in the south, where our hotels are, and Corralejo in the north, about 1 h 30 away by car. Pick by level: the south for strong wind and the lagoon, the north for an easier beach and for waves.

Sotavento (Playa Barca): the lagoon

This is where Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura, ZEL Fuerteventura and René Egli are. The trade wind is squeezed between two ridges behind the beach and speeds up again over the sea, so Sotavento is often windier than the rest of the island, and also gustier: ION Club and Planet Kitesurf Holidays both find the wind less regular here than at Risco del Paso. It blows offshore with a side component, so ride only when the rescue service is on duty.

ION Club has its centre almost on the water at this quieter, isolated end of Sotavento. With nothing built upwind, ION Club and Planet Kitesurf Holidays both describe the wind as less gusty than at Playa Barca, and the lagoon reaches here too when it fills.

IKSURFMAG's local guide calls Matas Blancas one of the flattest spots on the island, with an offshore wind boosted by the same venturi effect; a kite school works there. Costa Calma, the nearest resort town, has hotels, shops and water sports centres.

Flag Beach and El Burro (Corralejo)

Flag Beach faces the island of Lobos from a protected area at the edge of Corralejo. The official Canary Islands tourism site calls it a spot for every level, with easy water entry, schools and rental close by, and the most constant wind in spring and summer. At low tide sharp volcanic rocks appear, so ride at mid or high tide and consider booties. El Burro, a little further south, has flat turquoise water and a short left-hand wave for jumps, but no rescue and no services.

This is wave country. At El Cotillo, by Castillo beach, you launch quickly to beat the shorebreak and watch for hidden rocks; near Corralejo, Majanicho and Glass Beach are wave spots too, Glass Beach breaking fast onto a slab. ION Club and IKSURFMAG both keep these spots for riders used to waves.

ZEL Fuerteventura, the former INNSiDE by Meliá, reopened in May 2026 for adults only (16+) and is about 200 m away.

Tides

The Sotavento lagoon: when is it there?

The lagoon is not permanent. It fills when the high tides around full moon and new moon push the sea over the sandbank, and Sportif, a UK windsurf and kite tour operator, puts its depth at 35 to 85 cm for a couple of hours before and after high tide. At its best it is about 4 km long and up to 200 m wide, with flat, warm water you can stand in. The rest of the time the lagoon is mostly sand, and lessons and sessions move to the open sea in front of the centre, with jet-ski support.

René Egli publishes a lagoon timetable for each year, with the expected days, times and water levels: check the 2026 lagoon timetable before you book if lagoon days matter to you.

  • Only René Egli may teach in the lagoon: it bought the exclusive licence in 2012

  • René Egli runs a shuttle to the deepest part of the lagoon for its students and renters

Season

Is Fuerteventura windy? Wind and water month by month

Yes, especially in summer. Riders' guides put the windy season from March or April to late August, with June to August the most reliable, and ION Club and Sportif count June to September as the peak. Sources disagree on September: ION Club and Sportif include it, while IKSURFMAG's local guide warns that the wind often drops then. Winter brings lighter, less regular wind and bigger waves in the north, and outside summer a windless week is possible, so check the forecast before you fly.

What size kite for Fuerteventura

Sotavento is a small-kite spot in summer. Local pro rider Julia Castro says a 5 m is the usual kite there, with a 7 m and a 9 m also common on summer days and bigger kites outside the season. ION Club recommends 5 to 10 m in summer, 7 to 12 m in spring and autumn and 7 to 15 m in winter, depending on your weight and level. Two or three kites cover most weeks, and René Egli rents North kites in 17 sizes if you would rather travel light.

Lessons

Kite lessons in Fuerteventura: schools and prices

At Sotavento, René Egli teaches from 15 years old and 50 kg, in the lagoon when it is full and at sea with jet-ski support otherwise. Its website lists semi-private courses (two students per instructor) at €205 for 3 hours, €395 for 6 hours and €750 for 12 hours per person, private 2-hour lessons at €270 with gear, and kite rental at €110 a day, all paid on site; paying a week ahead saves 5%. These are the prices shown in October 2026: confirm them when you book. Rental and storage require upwind riding (IKO level 3K).

At Risco del Paso, ION Club teaches beginners and intermediates on the same lagoon, and in the north the Flag Beach centre's website advertises kitesurf courses from €75.

Families

Sotavento for families and non-kiters

Sotavento suits a family that likes space more than bustle. When the lagoon is full it is shallow and calm, and the open beach is huge, but the afternoons are windy, so plan beach time and swims for the morning and the pool after lunch. Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura has a kids club and children's pools with slides; ZEL Fuerteventura takes adults only, from 16.

On no-wind days:

  • Cofete, a wild beach of more than 10 km on the far side of the Jandía Natural Park, reached by car or by the bus from Morro Jable
  • Morro Jable, the main village of the Jandía peninsula, for its promenade, whale and dolphin watching and glass-bottom boat trips
  • Ferries from Morro Jable to Gran Canaria and Tenerife
  • Costa Calma, about 3 km north, the nearest resort town with shops
  • Majorero goat's cheese, protected by a Designation of Origin since 1996
  • In the north, the protected dunes of Corralejo and the island of Lobos, opposite Flag Beach

Travel

Getting there and getting around

Fly to Fuerteventura airport (FUE) near Puerto del Rosario, about 4 hours from much of mainland Europe, with direct flights all year. Sotavento is about 65 to 70 km south by road, roughly an hour's drive. Public transport is limited, so most kiters rent a car, which also opens up the north, about 1 h 30 from Sotavento. If you stay at the hotels on the spot, you can ride all week without driving.
