The spot
The kite spot near the hotel
From ZEL you walk about 200 m to René Egli's kite centre, in the palm garden ZEL shares with Paradisus, at the edge of the lagoon. You rig on the wide sandy beach with launch helpers, lifeguards watch from supervision towers and jet skis handle rescues. The north-east trade wind is accelerated between two ridges behind the beach, so it is often stronger here than elsewhere on the island; it blows side-offshore, so ride only when the rescue service is on duty.
Around full and new moon, high tide floods the lagoon behind the sandbank for a couple of hours either side of high water, up to 4 km long and 35 to 85 cm deep, and René Egli is the only school licensed to teach there. On other days you ride the open sea in front of the centre.

For non-kiting partners
ZEL is built around active rest: an infinity pool facing the Atlantic, a heated pool, studios for HIIT, Pound and barre classes, a running club and cycling routes, plus introductory Atlantic dives with local professionals and workshops with local creators. Dining runs from specialty coffee at Café de Finca in the morning to Mediterranean dishes with island produce at PARDA, lighter food at the beach club and cocktails with music at the Voltaje bar in the evening.
The beach in front is huge and sandy, and the lagoon is shallow and calm when it fills. Some guest reviews find the music around the pool and restaurants loud.

The kite school next door
René Egli runs the kite centre in the garden ZEL shares with Paradisus, about 200 m away, and lists ZEL as one of its two hotels. Semi-private courses start at €205 per person for 3 hours (prices on the school's website in October 2026), from 15 years and 50 kg.
Travel
Location and getting there
ZEL stands at Playa Barca on Sotavento beach, about 3 km south of Costa Calma, inside Fuerteventura's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and next door to Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura. Fuerteventura airport is about an hour away by car. A car helps for Costa Calma's shops, Cofete beach and the north of the island.
