In short
Mikri Vigla is the kite spot of Naxos, and Mikri Vigla Hotel stands right on the sand of its north beach, Parthena. The video at the top of this page times the walk: 1 min 57 s from a room to the kite spot, kite bag on the back, with no road to cross. In summer the Meltemi blows side-shore to side-onshore across a big sandy bay. Kite Center Naxos by Thalasea Sports is about 100 m along the beach, and Naxos Kitelife and Flisvos are about 300 m away, a 4-minute walk.
It is a full 3-star hotel, with a restaurant, a pool bar, a pool sheltered behind the beach, a children's pool and a playground, while most places to stay at Mikri Vigla are studios, apartments and villas. As far as we know, it is also the only one in the village where you can book all-inclusive. The family can watch you ride from the sunbeds, or move to the pool when the wind picks up. More about the spot in our Naxos kitesurf guide.

The spot
The kite spot in front of the hotel
Mikri Vigla is the main kite spot of Naxos, and Naxos Kitelife calls it the most famous and safest kitesurfing spot on the island. A granite headland splits the bay in two: the north beach, Parthena, is the kite side, and the hotel stands on its sand. The beach is about 600 m long, so there is room to rig, launch and land, and riders who drift downwind simply land on the beach and walk back (Flisvos).
In summer the Meltemi blows from the north, side-shore to side-onshore from the right, from about mid-May to September and most steadily from June to August. Naxos Kitelife finds it often 5 to 10 knots stronger than forecasts suggest, usually light in the morning and filling in by about 1 pm. In July and August the bay is busy with kiters and windsurfers, so the early and late sessions are the quietest. More in our Naxos kitesurf guide.
- Water: wind chop, a little more of it at the launch, and no shorebreak
- Level: fine once you can ride upwind; complete beginners should learn with a school
- Kites: bring small sizes for the strong high-season wind; the centres rent full sets from about €55 an hour
From Mikri Vigla
Our take
What we liked, and what to know before you book.
- The walk: 1 min 57 s from our room to the kite spot, kite bag on the back, past the beach bar. Watch it at the top of this page.
- The beach: in our view the most beautiful on Naxos, with the clearest, deepest blue water on the island.
- The spot: big and open, with just a little chop to get through at the start. Great once you can ride; we would not call it a spot for complete beginners.
- The food: lunch and dinner at the hotel are good. The chef is Italian, so expect plenty of Italian dishes and pasta, and the international dishes are good too, with a few Greek specialities depending on the day.
- For the family: the sunbeds face the kite zone, but on strong days the wind hits the beach hard. The pool behind the beach is the calmer place to be then.
- Around the hotel: well-rated places to eat within a few minutes' walk, from the bakery to pita gyros and beach cafés.
Family
For families and non-kiters
The hotel describes itself as a place for families with children and for couples looking for peace, and days here split easily between the beach and the pool. The beach sunbeds face the kite zone, so the family can watch you ride; sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach cost extra (D-reizen). On strong Meltemi afternoons the wind blows hard across the sand, and the pool behind the beach is more sheltered, as a TripAdvisor reviewer also notes.
Young children have their own pool and a playground, and baby cots are available on request. No kids club is mentioned. Mornings are usually lighter, so swim early, or walk about 600 m round the headland to the sheltered south beach. On no-wind days Thalasea rents kayaks and SUPs, and Naxos Kitelife rents trainer kites for children.
Food
Where to eat: the hotel and the village
The hotel has a restaurant, a snack bar and a pool bar. Tour operators such as D-reizen sell it with half board or all-inclusive, and TripAdvisor tags it all-inclusive, so nobody has to cook or drive to dinner. Guests praise the breakfast buffet, and the kitchen mixes Italian, international and Greek dishes (see our take above).
For a change, the village is a short walk away, with tavernas, beach cafés, a bakery and pita gyros. Several places score 4.7 or more on Google.

School
The kite school next door
Naxos Kitelife is an IKO centre about 300 m from the hotel, a 4-minute walk, with private lessons from €85 an hour, coaching by radio, a rescue boat and instructors who speak six languages. Kite Center Naxos by Thalasea Sports, about 100 m along the beach, and Flisvos Kitecentre, about 300 m, also teach IKO courses on the same bay.
Access
Location and getting there
The hotel is in Mikri Vigla, on the southwest coast of Naxos, about 9 km from the airport and 11 km from Naxos Town and the port (hotel figures). The coast road via Plaka has an unpaved stretch and takes about 15 minutes from town; the paved inland road via Vivlos is a little longer. Taxis at the airport are few, so book a transfer or rent a car, which you will want for the island anyway.
Most visitors reach Naxos by boat: 35 to 50 minutes from Mykonos by fast ferry, from 1 h 10 from Santorini, or 3 h 10 to 7 h from Piraeus. The flight from Athens takes about 45 minutes. Ferries, buses and transfers are in our Naxos kitesurf guide.
Honest notes
Good to know before you book
- Beach sunbeds and umbrellas cost extra, and beach towels are lent against a deposit (D-reizen).
- On strong Meltemi afternoons the beach is very windy: plan pool time or the sheltered south beach for non-kiters.
- July and August are busy on the water: ride early or late, and keep clear of the rocks at the downwind end.
- It is a simple 3-star hotel: guests rate it 4.1/5 on Google and TripAdvisor.
- A car is useful for Naxos Town, Plaka and the villages: the port is 11 km away.
