Which course is right for you?
- Never kited, but sporty and used to boards: the 6-hour beginner course, in a pair (€386 each) or private (€504), over two or three days.
- Little or no board-sport experience: the 10-hour intensive course (€614 each in a pair, €819 private) over three to five days, with more practice time.
- Had lessons before: the 2- or 4-hour advanced course refreshes the basics and gets you riding.
- Already riding: private training by the hour, with or without rental gear, for technique, manoeuvres and tricks.
- Children under 14: private lessons only, in 4- or 6-hour courses; KBC advises the 6-hour course for younger children and those new to board sports.
- Foilers and wingers: kitefoil courses for riders with good kite control, wing foil courses at kite-course prices, and a foil simulator boat for windless days.
The spot
Wind and conditions at the station
A constant north wind blows into the big bay. At the KBC centre it comes side-offshore, seasonally side-shore, but only after crossing about 1 km of sea, which KBC says makes it steady and smooth; even in strong wind the water in the bay stays fairly calm, which suits learning and freestyle. The shore and entry area is wide but so shallow that you cannot ride there at first: training and riding start a little further out, in deeper water, and that is why courses take two students at most.
From December to February there are more very strong and very light days, and the wind is less constant than in the rest of the year. KBC finds Windguru's forecast the most accurate for the spot. More about the season in our Soma Bay kitesurf guide.
Safety
Safety and equipment
Several boats support the lessons and come out within minutes for riders who cannot get back upwind, lose their kite or board, or have problems in deep water; the spot fee includes a number of boat rescues, and more can be booked. Beach staff help you launch and land. Every rider, even with their own gear, registers at the office first, and renting needs a level equal to VDWS licence level 4 (level 5 for foil gear), which you can also get on site.
The rental fleet is F-ONE: kites from 5 to 17 m, freestyle, freeride and surf boards, foils and wings, with seat or waist harnesses and wetsuits in many sizes. With the Diamond Service upgrade, from €13 a day, the team rigs, swaps and rinses your gear for you.

Where to stay
Steigenberger Resort Ras Soma is about 1 km north: a free shuttle leaves the hotel entrance every hour on the hour from 9 a.m., and Steigenberger guests pay a lower spot fee (€21 a day instead of €26). From other hotels in Soma Bay or north Safaga, KBC books a taxi shuttle for €7 to €10 per car each way (its pages give both figures).
