The kite centre has closed

Until September 2026, the Harry Nass windsurf and kite centre ran a large station on the hotel beach. It closed for good on 26 September 2026. In an interview with surf magazine in May 2026, Harry Nass said the hotel wanted to reorganise the beach for its change to Mövenpick and had offered a much smaller site far from the water. No new kite operator on this beach could be found on 29 October 2026.

For the record, Harry Nass described a large freeride area in front of the hotel, with the wind usually cross-shore from the left and sometimes cross-offshore in the morning, sandbanks about 700 m upwind, a mostly sandy bottom with small patches of coral, and recommended neoprene shoes. Without a station there is no launch help, rescue or storage, so ask the hotel whether kiting from its beach is allowed at all.

Options

Where to kite from the Mercure

The nearest kite school found is Kite Royal Academy, which says it teaches at the Pickalbatros Palace Resort; its Google Maps listing is about 1.3 km south of the Mercure in a straight line. Its website welcomes visiting riders as well as hotel guests for rental, but ask about access to the resort before you go.

Further away, Happy Surf works from the harbour of the Continental Hotel Hurghada, about 3 km north, and High Surf & Kite from the beach of the Hurghada Long Beach Resort, further south. If you want to walk from your room to the water with your gear, a hotel with its own kite school is the better choice.

Families

For families and non-kiters

The 1,800 m² pool, the kids' club and the 700 m private sandy beach with coral reefs are the heart of a family stay, and Superior Family Rooms of 48 m² sleep up to five. Adults have a wellness centre, a fitness centre, tennis courts and a diving centre, and the hotel offers excursions to Giftun Island, Sharm El Naga and the Roman ruins of Mons Claudianus.

Meals are all-inclusive: buffets at Dar Al Andalus, whose terrace overlooks the pool, an Oriental restaurant, and the Azur, beach, pool and Ultra bars. Renovation work for the Mövenpick rebrand is under way: the main building is nearly finished, and a new indoor and outdoor all-day dining venue is due by 27 January 2027, according to Accor.

Location and getting there

The hotel is at Safaga Road km 12, on Magawish Beach south of central Hurghada, about 10 minutes from Hurghada International Airport (hotel figure). Its owner, Abu Dhabi Tourism Investment Company, and Accor, which runs it, plan to rebrand it as a Mövenpick after the renovation; in October 2026 Accor still sold it as Mercure Hurghada, and the published timetable has changed more than once.
